Toronto real estate. PROPERTY TAX REASSESSMENTS FOR 2006 AND 2007 - CANCELLED!

Minister of Finance Greg Sorbara announced today that property tax reassessments by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) would be cancelled for the next two years to allow for the implementation of the Ombudsman's recommendations to
Ontario's property assessment system.

"By cancelling the next two reassessments, we are giving MPAC the time it needs to consult on and implement important changes to the system," Sorbara said. "We want to ensure that the changes will result in an improved and strong, functioning system that is fair to all Ontarians." On March 28, the Ontario Ombudsman released a report which dealt with improving MPAC's assessment methodology and appeal processes. At that time, the government requested that MPAC conduct an analysis of the recommendations, focusing on their operational and cost implications and the positive outcomes of improving the property assessment system. In its recent report to the government, MPAC committed to implementing all of the recommendations directed to it by 2009. This timetable will allow MPAC to address and consult with municipalities on the cost and resources required to implement the recommendations."Our aim is to continue to improve the property assessment system in
Ontario while increasing transparency and accountability to the public," Sorbara said. "The system needs to serve the best interests of all ratepayers across the province."
The Ministry of Finance will consult with stakeholders on the Ombudsman's two recommendations that were specific to the government.
